I've found the game that has, to me, what Dust had...
Elite: Dangerous
Currently limited cross-play between XB and PC, PS4 release coming soon, and rumored to eventually be full cross-play between all three.
- Space sim with player run factions and persistent universe.
- Impossible learning curve and terrible NPE just like Dust
- Full scale 1:1 copy of the milky way, including every star, nebula, etc that we currently know about. Less than 1% of the galaxy has been explored by players
- Massive depth geared towards ultra realism!
- In-game economy and market
- You can do whatever you want: smuggle, mine, fly a large cargo ship, bounty hunt, form a fleet and attack other players, conquer systems
Honestly, if you want an immersive space sim, this is it.
If you want to hop on there, my name is Waagenator, and I'm part of the SAP CORE LEGION. They are very welcoming to new players and will set you up with some basic gear.
Watch the developer diaries. Amazing stuff to be honest. Most impressed I've ever been with a game.

FPS coming eventually. And ship boarding, multi crew ships etc.
Currently you can deploy a shuttle and drive around planets. Watch the dev diaries, they have amazing plans, and have followed through on everything they've promised so far.
What this game has that I love is the territory and player run corporations etc. Just like Dust. You can go to the starmap and see who owns what.
Best thing about this game is that it was crowdfunded, therefore there are no greedy publishers like EA forcing them to chop the game into DLC and cut content etc. These are passionate developers making exactly the game they want.
I've had the game a week and honestly am extremely impressed with it.
If you want to get a sense of the scale of this game, go to the 4:50 minute mark of this youtube video, and watch what happens when this guy gets close to the rings of a saturn-like planet.
